dual boot - How to install Ubuntu GNOME on my HP Pavilion UEFI-based laptop running Windows 10

I bought this laptop over a year ago and it came with Windows 8 at the time, but I've since updated it to Windows 10 using the Insider Preview program. I would like to install Ubuntu GNOME 15.10 alongside Windows, but I've never dual-booted Linux and Windows on a UEFI system. Normally, I've delt with PCs that have BIOSs instead. I set aside 80GBs of unallocated space for the installer to use.

I've got a live USB set up and when I boot it up, I choose the UEFI version of the USB drive. I don't know much about the UEFI system, so I figured that would be the right way to go.

When I open the installer and I get to the Installation Type section, I don't know whether to choose Install Ubuntu GNOME alongside Windows Boot Manager, or choose Something Else. I've tried looking on multiple sources via Google searches, but the results are not consistent, so I'm not definitively sure which way is the best way to go.

Here's a picture of all the partitions I've got installed in GParted.

P.s: I've also disabled Fastboot in Windows.

wireless - Wifi not working on Ubuntu Dual Boot with windows 8.1 ( ASUS X550LD )

Hey guys i recently dual booted Windows 8 and Ubuntu 14.04 LTS on my laptop ASUS X550LD. The dual boot works perfectly but wifi doesnt connect in Ubuntu.

It connects on Windows 8 perfectly. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source

apt - Unable to find the .lit file reader app clit

I have some lit files I want to convert from Microsoft reader files to something my other devices can read. My friend says I should have clit, in

$ which clit
/usr/bin/clit

but I cannot find it. I tried locate clit but the results are unrelated. So then I tried sudo apt-get install clit but it says package not found.
Is clit a standard package? where can I find it?

Download Calibre - this will read your LIT format files, and also be able to convert them to other formats.

OR

you can install the clit program by sudo apt-get install convlit

Installing MATLAB in Ubuntu 17.04

I was trying to install MATLAB in pc. I used the command,

sudo apt-get install matlab-gdf dynare-matlab libpdl-io-matlab-perl matlab-support matlab-support-dev matlab2tikz

, however I came across this error message.

E: Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/t/texlive-base/texlive-pictures-doc_2016.20170123-5_all.deb Connection failed [IP: 2001:67c:1560:8001::11 80]
E: Unable to fetch some archives, maybe run apt-get update or try with --fix-missing?

amd then I ran the command

sudo apt-get update

, still got the message:

E: Could not get lock /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock directory /var/lib/apt/lists/

could some one help me out with this? if I can still install it, please tell me what should I do?

if it's not installable, please tell me how to remove it completely and thoroughly from my PC.

Thanks a million! :)

bug reporting - Bug report conundrum

I'm running Kubuntu 12.04. Like many others, I often get the message on startup "An application has crashed on your system (now or in the past)." This message is obviously completely unrevealing. But I do know how to find what's causing it: look in apport.log.

The bug I want to report is simply that the error message is inappropriate and should specifically advise looking in apport.log. But I haven't been able to figure out how to report this bug.

grub2 - Can't load Windows 7 after choosing it in the GRUB

My laptop primarily came with Ubuntu 12.04, and I had a friend install Windows 7 ultimate for me. The grub used to work upon long pressing of the shift key when they system boots up. upon choosing the designated name for windows by enter key, Windows 7 would boot up.

This was all fine till last night. This morning, I installed all updates on Ubuntu, and then when i wanted to boot Windows, it isn't happening. No matter how many times I enter Grub and choose Windows, its only Ubuntu that's loading.

I need desperate help, please :(

boot - Graphics driver problem: GTX 1050 - Ubuntu 18.04

I have a problem installing graphics drivers for Nvidia GTX 1050 on my Dell XPS 15 9560 running Ubuntu 18.04.

My Problem:

When I installed the drivers for my graphics card in Linux and reboot, i just boot up into a black screen saying:

"/dev/sdb2: clean, 185450/31244288 files, 4166820/124957440 blocks"

From this "black screen" I can go into TTY.

What I have tried:

I have searched the web and tried the following

  • Turn secure-boot off.

  • Tried several different drivers.

  • Tried formatting the SSD and reinstalling Ubuntu.

An answer would be much appreciated.

wireless - Is there a way to make Ubuntu "forget" a network connection?

Is there a file or something that holds the data for the internet connections?

package management - Does the old version of apt information file exist on the website?

When I execute apt update, apt will update the file on the website listed in /etc/apt/sources.list to local, for example, http://cn.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/xenial/main/binary-amd64/Packages.gz, apt update will download this file to local(/var/lib/apt/lists). this file describes the dependencies of the deb package.

Does the old version of this file exist on the website?

Thanks in advance!

Cannot find the graphviz package in apt on 18.04.1 LTS

I'm trying to install graphviz on 18.04 but when I try to install it it says it is unavailable, despite being listed as having been released for 18.04: https://www.ubuntuupdates.org/package/core/bionic/universe/base/graphviz

I ran apt-get update and it is still missing from the repos. Does anyone know where to find it, or a PPA I could add to install it from?

I found the answer myself, I didn't have the "Universe" repository enabled in Ubuntu. I just had to run the following

sudo add-apt-repository universe
sudo apt update

And then installing it worked with

sudo apt install graphviz

software installation - What is the correct way to install proprietary ATI Catalyst Video Drivers (fglrx) directly from AMD?

I am planning on doing a fresh install of Ubuntu and want to know what is the correct way to install ATI Catalyst Video Driver?

There are multiple valid answers for this question spanning over several versions of Ubuntu. For your convenience an index of each below:

First, make sure your Ubuntu OS is up-to-date. To check this, click the power icon in the top right corner. From the menu select 'About this computer'. Now check if there is an 'Install updates' button (it might appear after a few seconds after the 'Checking updates' button) which can be used to update as shown below. If not, your system is up-to-date.

(First you might see this)
enter image description here

(Then this)
enter image description here

(After pressing 'Install Updates' you will see this)
enter image description here

One may also resort to using the terminal command as shown below to update:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

  • Then go to the AMD website, manually select the driver, and download. If you are unsure which driver to install then you could install the 'Driver detecting software' in your Windows OS and see the driver that you ought to install.

  • Check the release notes and installer notes of whichever driver you are going to install without fail. See if your OS meets all the system requirements mentioned in the release notes.

  • Then follow the steps in the installer notes to install your driver.

NOTE:

1: If you installed the wrong driver(or made some other mistake with installing the driver), Unity might crash or you may get "The system is running in low graphics mode" problem (or some other issue). Whatever the problem is, you have to first delete the driver you installed. For this, start a tty session by pressing CTRL+ALT+F1. Then use this command :

sudo aticonfig --uninstall

This should delete your driver. If not refer this . Now use the command:

sudo shutdown -r now

to reboot your system. This should help you to get back to unity without problems. Now you can again get to the AMD site, get a supported driver and install.

If this didn't solve your problem referring to these questions might be useful:

2: Also if you don't know if your OS satisfies the system requirements of the driver mentioned in its release notes, then the following commands might help:

  1. uname -a : will let you know about your Kernel

  2. Xorg -version : will let you know about your Xorg

  3. ldd --version : will let you know your glibc

Also it is not necessary that your OS needs to specified in the release notes. Just see if you meet the system requirements and if your graphic card is mentioned in the release notes.

3: Make sure you update your OS before installing your graphics driver as stated above. While your OS might support your driver before updating, after your OS update it might not.

4: Also don't be startled if your driver installer appears like this (without any text):

enter image description here

In this case see the installer notes and with the help of the screen shots provided there install your driver.

P.S.:

In my humble opinion, the default open source drivers serve all the normal needs of computing. So install the proprietary driver only if you really need it (like if you are a 'techy' gamer or something). Also, if you are trying to install your proprietary driver just to get your maximum screen resolution then you might refer to this answer.

command line - How do I save terminal output to a file?

How do I save the output of a command to a file?

Is there a way without using any software? I would like to know how.

Yes it is possible, just redirect the output to a file:

SomeCommand > SomeFile.txt

Or if you want to append data:

SomeCommand >> SomeFile.txt

If you want stderr as well use this:

SomeCommand &> SomeFile.txt

or this to append:

SomeCommand &>> SomeFile.txt

if you want to have both stderr and output displayed on the console and in a file use this:

SomeCommand 2>&1 | tee SomeFile.txt

(If you want the output only, drop the 2 above)

apt - What can I do if a repository/PPA does not have a Release file?

When updating, I get the following error message:

W: The repository 'http://ppa.launchpad.net/mc3man/trusty-media/ubuntu xenial Release' does not have a Release file.

Here, I find another statement on this error: How can I fix a 404 Error when using a PPA or updating my package lists?

This recommends removing certain PPAs; and, I'm not sure if I should do that since it might mean not getting the updates that I need.

Is this what I should do?

The PPA you've added does not support your version of Ubuntu. For example, the ppa:mc3man/trusty-media PPA is only for Trusty (Ubuntu 14.04) only (trusty-media). Obviously, it has no files for Xenial (16.04). You can check the PPA's Launchpad page to see which versions of Ubuntu are supported.

I'd suggest the following:

  • Remove the PPA for older releases. For this example: sudo ppa-purge ppa:mc3man/trusty-media

  • If there's a PPA for your version, add it. In this case, there's a PPA for Xenial: mc3man/xerus-media. You can add it using sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mc3man/xerus-media

unity - Disable new keyboard shortcut for Show Desktop

After a recent upgrade of 14.04, an icon "Show Desktop" appeared in my launcher bar.

I removed it with Unity Tweak Tool.

A new keyboard shortcut was also setup: Super+D now also shows the desktop. This is annoying, since pressing Super+Alt+D in that order is not the same as pressing Alt+Super+D in that order. The former is erroneously interpreted as Super+D on my machine.

What I would like to do in a first step is to disable Super+D, but I cannot find where I can turn this off.

Here are the things I checked:

  • nothing in Settings > Keyboard

  • there is something in CompizConfig Settings Manager > Unity > General, but it is set to d. Disabling it does not disable d.

  • I disabled the shortcut in Unity Tweak Tool > Window Manager > Keyboard shortcuts > Show desktop

  • gconf-editor -> apps/compiz-1/plugins/showdesktop, I can't find anything about keyboard shortcut there

  • dconf-editor -> org/compiz/profiles/unity/plugins/unityshell -> show-desktop-key is Disabled

How do I disable the new d shortcut?

nvidia - Open Source friendly Graphics Card manufacturers?

Everyone knows that in general, Nvidia has the best supported graphics cards under Linux. But I don't want to buy into Nvidia's proprietary drivers if I don't have to. ATI has open source drivers, but they have almost no support, and their open source drivers are significantly worse than their closed source drivers. Intel has open source drivers, but their graphics are all integrated and built into the motherboard.

Are there any graphics card manufacturers which have open source drivers and are actually friendly with the open source community? I would gladly like to purchase from them if they exist.

dpkg - Package dependency problem (offline install of wireless drivers)

I have a friend wanting to install Ubuntu 10.10 as a dual-boot with Windows through Wubi. Unfortunately, he has a wireless card with a Broadcom chipset, and needs to install the drivers. There is no other way for him to connect to the internet; he cannot connect via Ethernet or another Wi-Fi dongle/card.

I generated a Synaptic download script for what I think are the appropriate packages, and he downloaded the .debs to \wifi\packages from Windows. He then ran these commands:

The xz-utils package would not install separately either. Is there any way to solve the dependency problem, or an easier way to configure the wireless card?

I am 99% confident you are trying to install 10.04 (Lucid) packages on a 10.10 (Maverick) system.

This is almost always a bad idea.

drivers - Catalyst on Ubuntu 13.04 hybrid graphics supporting dual screen?

anyone made double screen configuration works on Ubuntu 13.04 using Catalyst? I followed this guide How do I get AMD/Intel Hybrid Graphics drivers to work?

I have tried several drivers (the latest beta and the latest stable ones) - did not succeed. Everything works until I turn on the second monitor. After that just flickering. If anybody has the working configuration, please, let me know.

autostart - Service (grafana-server) does not start automatically on Ubuntu 16.04

I have a problem with autostarting Grafana on Ubuntu 16.04 (while it starts automatically on 14.04, also other added services on 16.04 configured in a similar way do start automatically).

I ran configuration as below:

$ sudo update-rc.d grafana-server defaults

No output from the command (running multiple times does not print any new information):

$ sudo update-rc.d grafana-server defaults
$ sudo update-rc.d grafana-server defaults
$
$ sudo reboot

After restart the service is stopped (if I delete /var/log/grafana/grafana.log before reboot, it is not created). The status is:

$ sudo service grafana-server status

Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/grafana-server.service; disabled; vendor preset: enabled)
Active: inactive (dead)

And the service starts up when called manually:

$ sudo service grafana-server status
● grafana-server.service - Starts and stops a single grafana instance on this system
Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/grafana-server.service; disabled; vendor preset: enabled)
Active: active (running) since Sun 2016-07-17 23:07:33 JST; 1s ago

└─2658 /usr/sbin/grafana-server --config=/etc/grafana/grafana.ini --pidfile= cfg:default.paths.logs=/var/log/grafana cfg:de

After another reboot, it does not start.

Startup scripts in init.d are present:

$ ls -l /etc/rc3.d/*grafana*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root 24 Jul 17 22:58 /etc/rc3.d/S04grafana-server -> ../init.d/grafana-server*

Dual boot fail, Windows 7 doesnt Load

After installing Ubuntu in a dual boot with Windows 7, I could not at first boot into either Ubuntu or Windows 7.

I then ran boot-repair from a live USB and restarted. After this, I was able to boot into Ubuntu 14.04. But Windows 7 still refuses to boot.

Grub shows the entry for booting Windows, but after selecting Windows, I am presented with the Windows screen, followed by a quick flash of a blue screen, then dumped back into grub.

Some additional info:
When I ran boot-repair, it mentioned that my NTFS was now SFS, and it had an LDM blocker.

NVidia Optimus: how to disable onboard Intel GPU so that NVidia drivers work - other than in BIOS

BACKGROUND:

I have an Acer Aspire V3-571G laptop which has an NVidia GeForce 710M GPU with "Optimus" technology (meaning it is capable of automatically switching between the onboard Intel GPU and the NVidia GPU, in order to optimize battery life)

Recently I installed NVidia's proprietary drivers on Ubuntu (previously I was using nouveau, until I realized that was only using the builtin Intel GPU and wasting the potential of the NVidia GPU).

Starting from then, I've incurred in this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1353620
that is, the system randomly freezes (i.e. stops responding) from time to time, unless I connect an external monitor, in which case everything works fine.

According to an NVidia technician that replied to a Customer Care ticket I opened, this is due to a complete lack of support of NVidia's linux drivers for Optimus technology.
(yes, a technology they created).

According him, disabling the onboard Intel GPU, which is "usually" done via the BIOS ("usually" is what he said), may fix the issue, avoiding the automatic switching between the two GPU's.

QUESTION:

Since there's no way in my computer's BIOS settings to disable Optimus or the onboard GPU so that only the NVidia card is enabled, does anybody know of any way to accomplish that other than the BIOS?

P.S. Please refrain from suggesting Bumblebee, that would be OT. I'll investigate that, but my question here is if there is a way to disable the onboard Intel GPU if such an option is not available in the BIOS.

If you don't have the option to switch GPUs in the BIOS then it's quite likely you have a muxless laptop, where the Nvidia GPU doesn't have direct access to the internal laptop display, and where it wouldn't make sense to switch off the Intel GPU.

Apart from the BIOS, there is a the vga_switcheroo command, which allows one to change which GPU acts as the primary GPU, but this command doesn't work on muxless laptops either -- you're not missing much though, it's tricky to use, and only works on a very limited set of hardware anyway.

It's not that dire though, as you have three options available to you:

  1. Bumblebee (Nvidia)

  2. Nvidia Prime (Nvidia)

  3. Optimus Prime (Nouveau / Proper Linux Way(TM))

Bumblebee and Optimus Prime allow you to use the Intel GPU most of the time, but to offload 3D rendering to the Nvidia GPU on a per program basis, and Nvidia Prime allows you to 'switch' which GPU is active, but using software muxing rather than hardware muxing.

I'd recommend reading an article I've written (Driving Multiple Monitors on an Optimus Laptop) that should hopefully give you a better understanding as to your options, and allow you to confirm whether your laptop definitely is muxless or not.

Ubuntu 14.04 not discovering wireless router

My Ubuntu version 14.04 suddenly stopped discovering my comcast wireless router. I can see other routers. I can also connect to it by "Connect to a Hidden WIFI Network..".

Is this a router configuration issue?

12.04 - 'Your system is running in low-graphic mode' after installing AMD fglrx drivers on a 6600M

Looks like I have a problem that has already been debated but non of the solutions provided did not work for me, so I'm asking this question again in hpes that someone can help me.

I'm running 12.04 64 bit version on Lenovo E520 with AMD Radeon HD 6600M and Intel HD graphic. I was using catalyst 12.6 driver downloaded and installed from http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/previous/12/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx?os=Linux%20x86&rev=12.6.

However my system unexpectedly crashed with the "your system is running in low graphic card error". Since than I've removed the old ATI driver and installed the 12.8 version following their instructions with no problems, however the error still remains.
If I use open source drivers I can use Ubuntu, but it slow to the point I can't even use gnome 3.

Previous solutions described do not work for me:

networking - Wifi connection not working with Intel NUC + Wireless AC 7620

I am posting here with the hope to get help to solve the problems I have with my wifi connection on my Intel NUC with the Wireless AC 7620 on Ubuntu 15.04.

I have copied below the output of the Wireless Info Script, but before some short history and description about the problems I have.

I built my NUC about a year ago and installed Ubuntu 14.04 straight after for a media center use. Everything was working perfect, with fast and stable wifi connection. When Ubuntu 14.10 was released, I didn't upgrade (I wanted to stay on a LTS version) but kept doing the regular updates.

Then one day to another (somewhere around October / November 2014 I would say), everything went wrong: connection to the wifi was lost on a regular basis, sometimes every few minutes, transfer rate was dropping so low it would take several minutes to display the Google homepage, the connection would get lost and never come back.

I went through several forums/websites/wikis and tried many things. What got the best results I think was to disable the power management with iwconfig. Disabling/renabling the wifi and/or network was working also sometimes. Upgrading to newer Ubuntu version was sometimes improving the situation, sometimes not.

Today, I went back home and wanted to use my NUC again and the situation is worse as ever. Here are the symptoms :

  • The NUC quickly connects to my wifi network at startup.

  • The signal strength is good, to about 75 % I would say.

  • The connection is stable.

  • It is impossible to get to any website. If I try to reach the Google homepage for example, the Firefox wheel will turn for ever but nothing shows up.

  • Trying to update with apt-get update does trigger some data transfer, but at a very low transfer rate (I cancelled it after five minutes and it wasn't finished).

My router/internet access is a Freebox v5, but I think the problem really comes from the NUC/Ubuntu, as I am also running a Windows 7 desktop and a Debian Jessie nettop on wifi and none of them have these problems.

Thanks in advance for your help !

Any additional command line or test, let me know and I will do it ASAP !

Note: I removed all wifi networks that weren't mine from iwlist scan to stay below the 30000 characters limit.

I have a NUC as well and found that several minor quirks were fixed when I updated the BIOS to the latest. I urge you to do the same.

Next, check the settings in the router. WPA2-AES is preferred; not any WPA and WPA2 mixed mode and certainly not TKIP. Second, if your router is capable of N speeds, you may have better connectivity with a channel width of 20 MHz in the 2.4 GHz band instead of automatic 20/40 MHz, although it is likely to affect N speeds. I also have better luck with a fixed channel, either 1, 6 or 11, rather than automatic channel selection. Also, be certain the router is not set to use N speeds only; auto B, G and N is preferred. After making these changes, reboot the router.

Next, I recommend that your regulatory domain be set explicitly. Check yours:

sudo iw reg get

If you get 00, that is a one-size-maybe-fits-all setting. Find yours here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_3166-1_alpha-2 Then, set it permanently:

gksudo gedit /etc/default/crda

Use nano or kate or leafpad if you don't have the text editor gedit. Change the last line to read:

REGDOMAIN=IS

Proofread carefully, save and close the text editor. Of course, substitute your country code if not Iceland.

Reboot the NUC and let us know if stability is improved.

13.04 - No launcher or menu

I've upgraded from 12.10 to 13.04 and now I'm missing my launcher and menu bars. I can open terminal through keyboard shortcut. Can anyone help

Install CCSM

sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

And then run it in terminal (CTRL+ALT+T)

ccsm

Then search for "Ubuntu Unity Plugin". If it's not checked, check it.

If it is checked you may have another issue. Try restarting compiz:

kill -9 `pidof compiz`

This will kill it, it should start up again, if it doesn't, CTRL+ALT+F2 and then type:

sudo service lightdm restart

to restart the window manager. Go back to the terminal and run:

unity --reset

Which should reset unity. Note that in more current versions of unity, the reset option is now deprecated.

You could also try another desktop environment though this isn't a solution.

boot - Can't Try nor Install Ubuntu on Lenovo ideapad miix 310

I've just purchased a Lenovo ideapad miix 310 and my intention was to install Lubuntu but in the very first page after booting, when I click either to try or to install Lubuntu (same problem with Xubuntu and Ubuntu) I get a black screen. It remains black screen until I force the shut down with the button.

Secure boot disabled;
Downloaded the 64 bit version;
Iso image checked with md5sum;
Tried with two different USB drives;
Tried with Unetbootin from Mac and Rufus from Windows;

Same problem.
Any ideas?
Thanks

dual boot - GRUB has no option for Windows 10

I installed Ubuntu 18.04.01 LTS alongside Windows 10 but GRUB doesn't have an option to boot Windows.

When I hold shift to bring up GRUB there is no option for Windows 10.

I tried to boot to the Windows drive from BIOS and it just opened GRUB and booted Ubuntu instead, so then I used boot-repair to restore the MBR and booted straight to the Windows drive and it said, "Operating System not found".

https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1451149

This answer recommended creating a custom entry at /etc/grub.d/11_windows using this code:

#! /bin/sh -e
echo "Adding Windows" >&2
cat << EOF
menuentry "Windows 10" {
insmod ntfs
insmod chain
insmod drivemap
set root=(hd0,1)
drivemap -s (hd0) (hd1)
chainloader +1
}
EOF

When I loaded it from GRUB it said something like, "error: invalid signature".

Since none of that worked I used boot-repair's recommended repair and now it's back to booting Ubuntu when I try to boot the Windows drive.

Here's the pastebin it generated: http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/ztH5MSVts9/

Sorry if this seems like a duplicate question, but I've tried all of the answers I can find, and none of them have worked.

Update

I can't find them all but here's a few of the answers that I have tried:

https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1451149
(When I loaded this answer from GRUB it said something like, "error: invalid signature".)

No Windows 10 option in GRUB and Windows drive seems empty from Ubuntu
(This issue isn't exactly the same as mine, my Windows drive is not empty from Ubuntu. But update-grub didn't change anything when I rebooted.)

GRUB does not detect Windows
(os-prober gave no response when I used it here. Then update-grub didn't change anything.)

Unable to boot into Windows after installing Ubuntu, how to fix?
(The approved answer didn't work for me, I think because my PC isn't running UEFI. Karel's suggestion to use boot-repair to fix Windows boot files didn't work either, it still boots into GRUB with no Windows option when I load either hard drive.)

https://askubuntu.com/a/890562/880950
(When I make and load a custom entry, like in this answer, it says, "error: file "/bootmgr" not found".)
Here is the code I used at /boot/grub/custom.cfg:

menuentry "Windows 10" --class windows --class os {
insmod ntfs
search --no-floppy --set=root --fs-uuid 4A42271C42270C6F
ntldr /bootmgr
}

Update 2

I loaded up the Windows Recovery drive and tried the following:

C:
Bootrec /fixmbr
“This operation completed successfully.”
Bootrec /fixboot
“The volume does not contain a recognized file system.”
Bootrec /rebuildbcd
“Scanning all disks for Windows installations.
Total identifies Windows installations: 1
[1] C:\windows
Add installation to boot list?”
Yes
“This volume does not contain a recognized file system.”
bcdedit
“The boot configuration data store could not be opened.
The system cannot find the file specified.”

https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/634635/window-10-will-not-start/
I found this forum where they seem to be having a similar issue, and recommend using “chkdsk C: /r” so I tried that and it returned:

“Windows has scanned the file system and found no problems.”

If you run a dual boot with say Windows and Ubuntu, sometimes Ubuntu's Grub can mess with the Windows System Boot and change the disk's MBR or interfere with Windows Boot Manager, making it impossible to boot into Windows from either the Grub menu options or from the BIOS boot menu. In such a case it is relatively easy to repair the MBR and/or Windows Boot Manager from a Windows command prompt found on the Windows Recovery and Repair disk/drive, which every Windows user should make and have at their disposal. The standard command used is bootrec together with its various switches used to fix the MBR and Windows Boot Manager if necessary. A good guide to using this command for Windows 10 and earlier versions can be found here.

However you may find once you've fixed things for Windows that you can only boot directly there and not into Grub. If that is the case boot into your Ubuntu Live UFD and run boot-repair. A good guide to doing this is found here. Once this has been done most times there should be no further booting issues, and Grub should appear on restart with the option to successfully boot to either system.

Last and not least you should always back up both Windows and Ubuntu systems by imaging, as this is the quickest way to dig yourself out of any system corruption issues, as well as useful for rolling back your system. Although Windows 7 - 10 has its own imaging system built-in, it is not recommended as it sometimes proves unreliable, as the OP found out to his cost. Ubuntu has its own GUI for this being Disks, which allows you to image individual partitions, the root \ being the most important one. But the best and most versatile imaging system is Macrium Reflect as this free GUI will back up both Windows and Ubuntu. For imaging Ubuntu, you have to make a Macrium Recovery USB first from within Windows. But once you've made this USB you can happily image either system once booted into it. It is very reliable and can be used to backup systems running on a UEFI or Legacy BIOS. It even includes a Windows command prompt so that you can run bootrec or any of Windows repair commands from there. Details of how to make the USB are shown here.

How can I install Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Server on an HP ProLiant ML10 v2 Server

I recently wanted a new Tower Server to run Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Server in my office. I have done many Linux/Ubuntu installations on dozens of machines over the years. I found an inexpensive machine in the "HP ProLiant ML10 v2 Tower Server System i3-4150v3 3.5 GHz 8 GB RAM 500GB SATA 7.2K," for $260 online.

It appeared from the HP website that Ubuntu installation was a supported configuration, but I found some posts indicating that there might be a problem with the disk driver, with one post saying that there was not a stable driver available. I could not find the drivers on the HP website, although I did find the manual at http://h20565.www2.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?sp4ts.oid=7796450&docId=emr_na-c04622279&docLocale=en_US

I bought the machine, connected an external DVD drive to the USB port, put a DVD with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Server AMD64 in the drive, and turned on the computer.

After several cycles of a POST sequence, the system booted from the DVD, and the installation completed normally, including the GRUB install in the MBR. At the end, the installation ejected the DVD, and prompted me to start the reboot sequence into Ubuntu.

However, when the machine tried to boot from the HDD, I got the message "Non-system disk or disk error."

There are several posts about this problem over the past several years, but none that comprehensively describe the process for the ML10 v2, so I thought I would document my findings for those who want to use one of these inexpensive and capable servers with Ubuntu.

How to install Ubuntu Server on HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8?, from 2014, describes the process of changing the SATA Conroller support with a ProLiant Microserver Gen8

https://www.linuxserver.io/index.php/2015/03/24/hp-proliant-microserver-gen8-g1610t-setting-up-a-linux-home-server/, from 2015, describes the process in more detail, also using a Microserver Gen8, and includes screenshots, but I found they did not match exactly my BIOS screens.

It may be that the Ubuntu installation is able to adjust the controller so that the installation can write to the HDD, but that the boot BIOS does not make that adjustment.

In any case, what worked for me was to let the first stage POST complete, and then the second stage Processor Initialization will show an "F9" button at the bottom of the screen. Pressing the F9 key on the keyboard will "light up" the "F9" button, and after this Processor Initialization, the "ROM-Based Setup Utility" will start. As per the screenshots in the second of the two references above, first select "System Options" and press Enter, then select "SATA Controller Options" and press Enter.

Here, the new system is a little different than the screenshots shown for the Microserver Gen8 -- I had to select "Embedded SATA Configuration," and when I did, I got a scary Yellow-on-Red warning that this would destroy my system (which would undoubtedly be true if I had a system installed).

Press Enter to get by this warning, then change from "Enable Dynamic HP Smart Array B120i RAID Support" to "Enable SATA AHCI Support", and press Enter. Note at the bottom that " Saves Selection" - there is no explicit "save" in this setup utility.

Then, back out of the menus with Esc, and then " to Exit Utility" and then " to Confirm Exit Utility." Again, no explicit "Save" with this utility. Press F10, and the system will again go through the ProLiant System BIOS - Early Processor Initialization. After that completes to 100%, you will go to the next stage "Processor Initialization.

If you have made the change correctly, during this second stage you will see a message "HP AHCI SATA Controller Initializing" and then "HP AHCI SATA Controller" and then "Broadcom NetXtreme Ethernet Boot Agent"

You can then install Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Server from the DVD (using your external DVD drive connected to a USB port). A message flashes during the installation about some BIOS corruption, but that does not seem to be a problem for the installation.

I selected the LVM with Encryption option, so when the system boots, I get a message "Please unlock disk sda5_crypt:" at which point I enter the password I used to encrypt the disk, and the system boots.

I would also mention that these servers come in a few standard configurations, and that there is also a configurator on the HP site, but selecting a custom configuration is very expensive -- just find a system configured the way you want, and you can have a very capable server for a very low price.

The manual for the HP ProLiant ML10 v2 Server is here: http://h20565.www2.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?sp4ts.oid=7796450&docId=emr_na-c04622279&docLocale=en_US

Hopefully, this post will encourage those who want an inexpensive Ubuntu Server to use this server.

wireless - WiFi problem on lenovo E520 ubuntu 18.04.1

I just installed Ubuntu 18.04.1 on my Lenovo E520 yesterday and I have this issue since i tried to connect to WiFi , WiFi connects and everything is ok
but after some time (sometimes minutes, sometimes seconds) the connection gets lost!
I searched for the problem and understood that when I type rfkill list all in my terminal I got this:

0: hci0: Bluetooth
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
1: tpacpi_bluetooth_sw: Bluetooth
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
2: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: yes
Hard blocked: no

I realized that all of them must be "no" but as you can see "Wireless LAN" is "yes" , I tried to make it "no" by typing this sudo rfkill unblock all but it works just for few minutes then turning back to "yes" again!
I don't know what to do

Here is my lspci-output :

lspci -knn | grep Net -A3

After a long time searching and asking finally my problem solved by fixing DNS on my internet. So here is the solution:

First save this codes as .sh file (it's a DNS fixer file) on your desktop (you can name the file whatever you want) :

#!/bin/bash
##start Local net Cheking
var1=`ip addr | grep brd | wc -l`
var2=`ip addr | awk {'print $1'} | grep : | wc -l`
if [ "$var1" == "$var2" ];then
echo -e "\033[91m[-]Your Are Offline!!!"
exit 1
else
echo -e "\033[92m[+]Your Local Netowkr Is Ok!."
##start internet Checking
ping -c2 -w2 8.8.8.8 1>/dev/null 2>/dev/null
if [ "$?" != "0" ];then
echo -e "\033[91m[-]You Have Internet ERROR! CHECK THAT."
exit 1
else
echo -e "\033[92m[+]Your Internet Is OK!"
##Start DNS Checking
nslookup gnu.org -timeout=1 1>/dev/null 2>/dev/null
if [ "$?" != "0" ];then
echo -e "\033[91m[-]You Have Dns ERROR! "
read -p "I cat To Ok That, Do You Want To Contniue?[Y/n] " yesorno
if [ "$yesorno" == "Y" ] || [ "$yesorno" == "y" ] || [ "$yesorno" ==
"" ];then
echo -e "nameserver 208.67.222.222\nnameserver 8.8.8.8" | sudo tee
/etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/tail 1>/dev/null
sudo systemctl restart NetworkManager
else
echo "Ok, You Need To Fix it."
exit 1
fi
else
echo -e "\033[92m[+]Your DNS Is OK!"
exit 0
fi
##End Of DNS Checking.
fi
##End of internet checking
fi
##End Of Localnet checking

After that open your Terminal follow the codes below step by step:

cd Desktop
chmod +x FileName.sh
./FileName
reboot

Hope It works for you
