Can't Select Ubuntu 18.04 Installation Type

When I try to run the Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS installer on my Lenovo Yoga 910 I'm stuck here. I want to erase my Windows 10 and just have Ubuntu but it seems as though the installer thinks I want to dual boot. Any suggestions on how to fix this? I would prefer not to have to make a dual boot.

installation - Removing GRUB after removing Ubuntu

Actually, I have done something terribly wrong. I did not want Ubuntu 13.04 on my PC anymore. I was sick of dual-booting every time the PC starts, and I wanted to return to Windows as well. (My version is Windows XP MCE SP2). The mistake I did is that I simply used EASUS Partition Manager to delete the Ubuntu partitions. But what went wrong here is that, even when I did it, the GRUB keeps trying to load. It says that GRUB could not be found and finally ends up running GRUB Rescue.

I cannot "Repair" my PC using the Recovery Discs (containing Windows XP MCE), it only gives me an option to press "F", which will format the HDD to re-install the OS.

Although, the best part is that I can still log in to Windows. Because, when I boot from the CD's, it does not give me a "Repair" option, but only "Format" and "Quit". By using "Quit", it takes me straight to Windows.

But I do not want to keep doing this same thing every time I start my PC. Neither do I want to Format my Hard Disk. I have tried a few applications, like EasyBCD which do nothing. So I want a good solution for it.

Is their any way to install MBR through Windows or maybe Ubuntu terminal? Even if i can't access Ubuntu again? And what after installing Ubuntu again. Any safe method to uninstall it?

I have fixed the problem now. The solution turned out easier than I thought. It was rather a cakewalk, and I did not even need to use Windows Recovery Disc (which were not working in my case). Here is what you need to do:

  1. Burn an Ubuntu ISO image onto a USB Drive or a DVD to make a Live USB/DVD.

  2. Boot into Live mode ("Try Ubuntu" option).

  3. After it boots up, press "Ctrl + Alt + T" to bring up the Terminal.

  4. Put these codes ONE AFTER ANOTHER.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yannubuntu/boot-repair

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install boot-repair

  1. After doing this, open the "Dash" (Search menu). It can be accessed by "Alt + F2"

    1. Search for "Boot Repair" (Although just entering Boot will give you the app).

    2. Open it and select the only option (Recommended one).

    3. Reboot. You will no longer get the GRUB Error after this, and will boot straight into Windows.

You can also do it with Ubuntu installed. In case you want to Uninstall ubuntu, first follow the above instructions, then after you are in Windows, install EASUS Partition Manager and delete the Ubuntu partitions (the ones that are NOT ntfs formatted)

10.10 - Screen turns gray on boot after install of a PPA

Problem
I recently added ppa:eugenesan/ppa to my maverick installation to install smartgit. Right after apt-get listed a bunch of updates that I immediately installed. After rebooting I noticed that grub changed. The new version of grub is 1.99~rc1-2ubuntu1~eugenesan~maverick1. Booting up my system I had to admit that it no longer launches the login screen. It still shows the Ubuntu logo (new style also) but after that the screen turns gray.

Solution ideas
I already found the apt-get history under /var/log/apt/history.log and it lists all the software that came with the new repository. The list is huge.

Further, I read that ppa-purge can uninstall a repository and all its software. I am not sure if I understood right since it does not affect the grub version installed. That would be the easiest to see.

Can you help me to fix my system? I have access to the command line.

Vague solution steps
Thanks to Lekensteyn. In the meantime I read and tried what was written in the other thread. Nonetheless, I cannot uninstall the software version that came by eugenesan. This is what I tried:

sudo ppa-purge ppa:eugenesan/ppa
rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/eugenesan...

Moreover, I found out that a "Previous Linux version" boots up normally. The default grub entries are Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.35-31-generic and ..(recovery mode) - the couple that does not boot up.
But when I choose Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.35-30-generic from the list, everything works fine. Do you understand what happens? Could it be that the graphic resolution is just set wrong OR do you think grub is the problem?

Installation log
To give a complete overview I got the history.log for apt-get. This is what happened in the meantime.

Kernel under suspicion
Could it be that kernel 2.6.35-31 is not working on my machine? I cannot see an installation had happened in the history.log, though. In case I want to remove the kernel I found an article on how to remove a grub menu entry.

I removed the kernel 2.6.35-31 as already mentioned. I am totally unsure about what happened. But in the meantime I can use my system again.

command line - Can't login to ubuntu 17.10 login loop

Can anyone help me, I cant log-in to my laptop. Looks like its just looping back to the login screen.

What may have caused it, I was downloading a dataset from Kaggle. Then I had to open the terminal and and type chmod 600 ~/.kaggle/kaggle.json (as shown here), I got an error so I put sudo chmod 600 ~/ pathname When I ran the second command It couldn't find the path and when I checked my files/folder in home it said "You dont have the permission to access these files". I have tried the following methods from AskUbuntu forum:

  1. Can't log in my ubuntu laptop, login loop

  2. Ubuntu stuck on login screen

But the problem still exists.
After using the first method I see the following output on my terminal

(Image 1)

but I am still stuck at the login loop.

EDIT : The image I get after running the this command find ~vat26 ! \( -readable -writable -user vat26 \( ! -type d -o -executable \) \) -ls |& tee /tmp/vat26-permissions.log (as asked by @David Foerster) is this :

(Image 2)

Boot a live session on your laptop from installation DVD or USB. Within live session in the file manager identify your drive. Open terminal and change directory to your home folder on the drive.

With

sudo chmod 755 /path_to_your_home_folder

you can fix your file permissions.

Note: path to your home folder will be in the live session like this: /media/disk_UUID/home/username

kubuntu - kstart detailed description

I'm having trouble getting kstart to work properly, so I'm looking for a much more detailed description of its behavior than what I can get from its manpage. Although the manpage describes all the parameters, all it says about its general functioning is "Utility to launch applications with special window properties." For instance, when does the calling shell regain control -- immediately or after some other actions are performed? What if any is the difference in behavior between kstart and kstart &?

I want to use kstart to start firefox, konsole, and kmail in desktops 1, 2, and 3 upon startup. (I'm running Kubuntu 14.10.) I tried including this as a startup script:

kstart --desktop 1 firefox
kstart --desktop 2 konsole
kstart --desktop 3 kmail

(I used System Setup/Autostart to install it.) The result was that my system hung solidly. So I tried this instead:

#! /bin/sh
kstart --desktop 1 firefox &
kstart --desktop 2 konsole &
kstart --desktop 3 kmail &
exit

I tried several other variations, most of which did not hang but nonetheless put all three programs onto the same desktop.

How can I get kstart to behave itself?

grub2 - Ubuntu missing from boot menu

I recently dual booted Windows 8 and Ubuntu 13.04, both UEFI. When I boot, I get directly to Windows 8, without any prompt or boot menu/grub menu. To access Ubuntu, I have to go to boot options by pressing F-12 while booting. How do I get the boot menu?

This might be a problem of broken grub. Grub is basically a boot loader. In other words it is the screen that comes up with options to start Windows or Ubuntu. I had a very similar problem. In my case I had dual booted Mint and Ubuntu. To fix the grub, check this.

ubuntu boot issue

So I recently installed Ubuntu 13.10 x64 on my laptop that already has Windows 7 x64 (a dual boot installation) and after restarting my laptop i get the following message.

error: no such partition
Entering rescue mode...
grub rescue> _

Most of the solutions talk about deleting or when uninstalling Ubuntu this and this happened. I have used the same ubuntu.iso on my desktop and it works just fine (also dual boot). I tried most the solutions I've seen like re-installing GRUB. Please help me out, i want to use both Ubuntu and Win7.

system installation - Dell XPS 15 9560: After booting from live USB, screen is stuck on distro logo.

I have a Dell XPS 15 9560 (4K display, NVIDIA GTX 1050, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, Core i7-7700HQ). I'm trying to install an Ubuntu flavor alongside Windows 10. I've attempted to install the latest versions of, first, Kubuntu before I tried Elementary OS, which I understand are both essentially Ubuntu with different desktop environments.

After booting to the live USB, I am presented with options to try the distro, install it, or OEM install. I've tried both of the first two options. After displaying a few ACPI log messages in the top left corner, the distro logos begin to glow, and my USB drive's activity LED is blinking. However, after a few seconds, the distro logo freezes and nothing happens. The light on my USB drive stops blinking.

I've attempted to disable fast boot and Secure Boot as well as switch from SATA RAID to SATA AHCI to no avail. I've tried hitting Ctrl-Alt-Fn keys as well, but there is no response.

Let me know if you need any more information.

I'd give a safe bet that is is something to do with the NVidia graphics. Start looking in the drivers and grub direction. I've had this problem before. Here's a decent place to start, may not fix your problem, but the same concepts should lead you down the road to fixing your issue.
https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/question/33891/optimus-laptop-how-to-disable-nvidia-card/

I remember being able to get things to boot by using modeset something or other. There is also a way to disable the nvidia card, and use the intel instead. Keep booting that way till you can get the nvidia stuff figured out.

cpu - Which version of Ubuntu is best suited for a Pentium 4

The question is pretty self-explanatory. I have a 2.8Ghz, 1GB RAM PC at my office. Windows is really slow on it and the Android Emulator never works properly on it. I am sure that Linux will definitely improve performance. What I can't decide is which version I should install?

P.S. Where can I find older versions of Ubuntu?

I see "ph1b" is best answer. You can download ubuntu 11.10, then update and finally download xfce or lxde desktop. lxde is lighter than xfce.

You can also download lubuntu like "Vic" said, but I tried and faced problem with it. I don't know why but you can try and you won't lose anything.

Anyway I think if you download ubuntu 11.10 with the default unity 3D, you will not face any problem anyway because it's requirements are 1GB RAM and 1 GHz processor only.

So download ubuntu 11.10 and try.

system installation - Only Erease Disk and Something else options when installing Ubuntu along Windows 8

How do I install Ubuntu 13.10 and dual boot Windows 8.1 pro? When I boot the installation USB I only get 2 options: "Erase disk and install Ubuntu 13.10", or "Something else". I tried "something else" but I don't know how to install it on a partition.

If you choose something else option it will directs you to select the partition in which you want to install ubuntu. And also force you to choose the linux-swap partition size.

Please allocate linux-swap partition size by following this link.

Upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04 to 11.10. X starts, Unity desktop not there

I upgraded my Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 system to 11.04 and then 11.10.

Now, when I start Ubuntu, the Unity desktop doesn't start correctly. Here's what I do:

  1. Start computer

  2. I log in via the GUI login screen

  3. The X Window System starts. I can see an arrow icon for the mouse, and can move it around the screen.

Nothing else starts. There are no desktop icons, no launcher, no taskbar, etc. Right clicking on desktop does nothing. I've tried some common keyboard shortcuts ("Alt-tab" "Ctrl-Alt-T" "Ctrl-Alt-Backspace") but nothing happens.

If I go to another Virtual Console, and run the command unity, the Unity desktop will start on my primary X desktop. However I'm seeing many problems like windows which are only half-drawn, some applications run without the familiar "Minimize, Maximize, Close"

What's happening here? It seems that the X Window System started, but Unity did not start?

How can I debug this?

Solved it.

In my case, I was running the proprietary ATI drivers (fglrx) for my ATI/Radeon graphics card. At some point during the upgrade, Ubuntu installed the open source ati/radeon drivers. However, these two drivers cannot exist alongside one another See bug 285603.

From what I can tell, the proprietary ATI drivers cause problems with Xorg especially if they exist alongside the opensource ATI drivers.

This is a common problem, and the steps are pretty well documented.

To fix this, I uninstalled the proprietary ATI drivers (fglrx) using these instructions. I had to use the section called "Problem: Need to fully remove -fglrx and reinstall -ati from scratch".

Then, I installed the open-source ATI drivers instead. The open-source drivers are called 'ati' or 'radeon'. I followed these instructions:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver

If anyone really wants the proprietary fglrx driver, you should still consider replacing the proprietary drivers with the Radeon drivers first, so that you can make your system stable first. Once the system is stable, then try experimenting with the ATI proprietary drivers starting from a stable system.

But it doesn't work for Java 7. There is no package sun-java7-xxx. How can you install Java 7?

I noticed the issue when trying to install docker, but I'm not really sure it had to do anything with this issue.

Any pointers on how to solve this problem?

Toshiba Laptop can't find Ubuntu on boot

I just installed ubuntu via a USB to my toshiba satellite laptop. Everything went fine as far as the install goes but when I go to restart so I can boot into the install the laptop can't find anything to boot off of. I went back into the live USB and everything was installed on the hard drive and if I try to re install it recognizes there is already a copy of the OS on the drive. Why won't the laptop find it?
p.s I had windows 8.1 before installing if that is of any importance.

maybe you want to look here and try it: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair

sadly don't know if it is really the boatloader. would be good if some experienced user comments here

I prepare a 16.04 Ubuntu live usb drive and boot from the usb drive. The machine has booted to the usb drive, but stuck in blank screen with a cursor blinking. Please help.

partitioning - How to change a partition size

I have windows 10 installed on my machine, and i want to make a new partition to build Linux on it. The problem is that i have currently only one partition which covers all sectors. When using fdisk it let's me choose the kind of partition (primary/logical) and than shows no sectors available. How can i change the partition size and still have a working windows?

installation - Ubuntu Wont Write a Win7 ISO to a USB

I'm trying to find a program or terminal code that can write a 3.1 GB Windows 7 Installer File to a 32 GB USB3+ flash stick.

I have tried the Startup Disk Creator but it won't select the Windows installer File. Any suggestions that I could use? (I'm new to Ubuntu)

11.10 - Cannot access nvidia-settings or use HDMI with Quadro 3000m

I've just done a fresh install of oneiric on a Dell Precision m6600 with a nVidia Quadro 3000m. I can log in to Unity 3D, but if I try to start nvidia-settings, I'm told "you do not appear to be using the nVidia X driver". Also, HDMI out doesn't work.

The automatically generated xorg.conf is very short and doesn't appear to be using the nVidia driver:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Default Device"
Option "NoLogo" "True"
EndSection

However, if I run nvidia-xconfig, it will replace the xorg.conf with, among other things, Driver "Nvidia" line, but when I restart the computer, lightdm won't even start at all.

This all occurs whether I activate nvidia-current or nvidia-current-updates by the "Additional Drivers" GUI. In either case, the GUI says "This driver is currently activated and in use". (obviously not).

How should I go about getting nvidia-settings and HDMI-out to work? Thanks!

connection - Can't get wifi on 14.04.2 lts

I installed Ubuntu on my laptop. It went well, but the WiFi does not work, when it did in Windows. I know it can't be the access point, since my friend can connect just fine from his computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Upgrade Ubuntu 15.10

I want to upgrade Ubuntu 15.10 to 16.04 with a USB bootable of Ubuntu 16.04 but at "Installation type" step I cann't choose "Upgrade Ubunutu 15.10 to Ubuntu 16.4".
What's wrong?

Don't upgrade using that method. Instead boot your normal system and run:

sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get -f install
reboot

sudo do-release-upgrade

You may need to run on a server sudo apt-get install update-manager-core.

upgrade - I installed an alpha or beta, am I up to date with the final release if I keep upgrading?

I installed an Ubuntu alpha or beta and have been keeping it up to date.

So, Should I presume that my system has automatically updated to the next alpha or beta, and will be running the official release when it's finished?

The beta uses the repositories as they are updated -- it is not a fixed snapshot of Ubuntu as it was when the beta was released.

If there are no more updates to be installed, then congratulations! You are running the final Ubuntu release. There is nothing else you need to do.

Here, have a totally simplified, consumer-side view of a release I hacked together in ten minutes:

link text

In this chart, when you run apt-get update, you discover there is a next dot you can hop to. When you run apt-get upgrade you hop to it. Version numbers are attached to some dots and cd images are made for that. The gold release is just one hop like any other one. Upgrading distros changes the line you are in.

partitioning - I want to recover my data from an external NTFS drive

I have tried testdisk to recover my lost data from my external disk. I've tried that and get the below message from terminal

Disk /dev/sdc - 1000 GB / 931 GiB - CHS 121601 255 63
Partition Start End Size in sectors
1 * HPFS - NTFS 0 1 1 121600 254 63 1953520002

Boot sector
Status: OK

Backup boot sector
Status: OK

Sectors are identical.

A valid NTFS Boot sector must be present in order to access
any data; even if the partition is not bootable.

What do I need to do next? I tried to install Ubuntu with a partition on the external drive on my laptop and when I went back to get my data the external didn't show anything.

installation - Installer gets stuck with a grayed out forward button

I have a CD with Ubuntu 10.10 and a laptop with Ubuntu 8.10. The laptop had all sorts of crud on it, and anything I wanted to keep was backed up on an external drive, so I was happy to do a wipe and reinstall instead of an update. So after a bit of faffing about trying to work out how to get the thing to boot from the CD drive, I did that.

So the screen comes up with the choice: the options are Try Ubuntu and Install Ubuntu. I choose to install and to overwrite my current installation. So far so good. I then get a progress bar labelled something like copying files (I forget the exact wording) and further options to fill in for my location, keyboard locale, username and password. On each of these screens there are forward and back buttons. On the last screen (password), the forward button is greyed out. Well, I think to myself, no doubt it will become active when that copying files progress bar completes.

The progress bar never completes. It hangs. And the label changes from copying files to the chirpy ready when you are. The forward button remains greyed out. The back button is as unhelpful as you'd expect it to be. And there's nothing else to click. We have reached an impasse.

I tried restarting the laptop, to test whether it actually was properly installed. It wasn't. I tried to run Ubuntu live from the CD, to test whether the disk was damaged. That wouldn't work either, but I suspect it's just because the laptop is old and has a slow disk drive. I'm typing this question on another computer using the Ubuntu live CD and it's working fine. So there's nothing wrong with the CD.

I recently encountered the same problem installing Ubuntu on a friend’s computer. It seems that Ubiquity (the Ubuntu installer) for 10.10 is not very informative when things go wrong. Does your username contain uppercase letters? Try making sure all letters in your username are lower case.

For more details, see: How should I file a bug about Ubiquity?

libreoffice - XCompose not working for high level Unicode characters

I'm trying to write some key stroke combinations into my XCompose to allow for typing cuneiform characters, which are defined in the U+12000 - U+1247F range. I've written other strange symbols into my XCompose file, such as signs of the zodiac and planets etc... and they all work just fine, even with the double Multi_key at the beginning (It's all for my research). Here's an excerpt of the file:

...
# Abbreviating some of the longer ones.

: "♏" U264F # SCORPIUS
: "♐" U2650 # SAGITTARIUS

: "♑" U2651 # CAPRICORN
: "♒" U2652 # AQUARIUS

: "♓" U2653 # PISCES
# Really, this should be SERPENTARIUS. All the other signs are in Latin.

: "⛎" U26CE # OPHIUCHUS

# Cuneiform
: "𒀀" # Cuneiform Sign: A
: "𒀁" # Cuneiform Sign: A x A
: "𒀂" # Cuneiform Sign: A x BAD

Just to prove that I have the fonts installed to show these signs, I'm attaching a screenshot of Gedit editing this file, showing the appropriate glyphs displaying:
Cuneiform in Gedit

When I try to use these key combinations for the cuneiform signs I get no character in either Gedit or Libreoffice (or any other text input program for that matter). I'm not sure what's wrong with the file, I think I've followed the correct syntax, and I have the fonts installed. Does XCompose not supported unicode glyphs at such a high range?

The ComposeKey sequences used by Gnome to enter special characters are hard coded into the program.

To use a custom Xcompose file, you will need to use the xim input method.

More information about using the compose key - and using xim to bypass the Gnome hardcodings - is given at ComposeKey in the community documentation.

The Gnome hard coding can be overruled in favour of the original Xwindow Input Method (XIM) by setting the environment variable GTK_IM_MODULE. This can be set in the /etc/environment file, but if the machine has more than one user then it is best set from the home directory on a per user basis by modifying ~/.gnomerc or ~/.Xsession

export GTK_IM_MODULE="xim"

Beyond that, it seems likely that you are essentially correct about the additional problems you are having. Direct Unicode input follows ISO 14755 in specifying only 4 hex digits in the code point and the cuneiform code points have 5 digits. It seems likely that this is also the underlying problem here. It seems that the layout is too complex for the compose key.

To enter cuneiform, I think you could create a custom keyboard layout (rather than using the compose key), but really this seems to require an input method editor rather than a keyboard. Your best option is to create a custom input table that would work with Ibus.

nvidia - Unity 3d support for multiple X-screens

I've installed Ubuntu 12.04 this weekend and have had problems getting Unity3d to work with my triple monitor set-up.

I've installed the latest nVidia drivers for my 2 nVidia video cards and have used NVIDIA X Server Settings to configure everything. If I stick each monitor on a separate X screen, all but the primary X screen will appear white and the cursor will be a black X. I can start a terminal on this screen but cannot drag other windows to it. If I kill the "Nautilus" process, the white background disappears and I see my desktop background, but my cursor is still an X and I still cannot drag windows to it.

If I enable TwinView, I can get one screen on two monitors to work properly, but the white screen remains on my third monitor. In addition, I don't like using TwinView because my full-screen applications get stretched.

My current solution is to "Enable Xinerama", use all separate X screens and revert to Unity2d.

I'd love a solution to this as Ubuntu 12.10 is not planned to support Unity-2d and prefer the aesthetics of 3d anyways. I can provide Xorg.conf for all configurations and any other suggested diagnostic information. Below is my closest-to-working xorg.conf:

unity - Ubuntu 14.10 no desktop after kernel update to 3.18.1

Using 14.10 with an ATI Radeon 5450 graphic card.

Everything was working fine after installing ubuntu 14.10. Then 1 or 2 weeks ago after a normal update, some applications started crashing (thunderbird, firefox, eclipse and sometimes also chrome).
To solve the crashes, I decided to update the kernel to 3.18.1 and see if it improves it.

Now, I no longer see the desktop (no launcher bar, no unity bar etc). The only thing I get is the wallpaper and the mouse.

Ctr+Alt+T doesn't work nor right click on the desktop.

I know that there are many similar problems on the net but none of the solutions worked for me (I'm trying for many hours now).

Solutions I've tried with no success:

Using Ctr+Alt+F1

  1. uninstall and reinstall fglrx

  2. export DISPLAY=:0
    ccsm

Enabled the openGL and unity plugin.

Important: The window of the ccsm did not have any title bar and could not be dragged !!

  3. Installed gnome, logged into ubuntu using gnome and got the same empty desktop.

  4. Tried re-installing compiz, ccsm, unity desktop, unity.

  5. sudo dconf reset -f /org/compiz/

than making sure using export DISPLAY=:0 and ccms that the openGL and unity are still checked.

When running sudo unity I'm getting an error:

...
...
compiz (core) - Error: Plugin 'opengl' not loaded

6.

Installed the open graphic drivers

Removed fglrx

dconf reset -f /org/compiz/

and

setsid unity

Restarted lightdm and got everything back. I was happy and everything worked fine for two hours until ubuntu crashed and does not start anymore. It now shows a black screen with only a cursor which probably means that also the open drivers are not good.

Any ideas?

Thanks a lot (:

UPDATE

The crashing was due to a hardware problem. The memory cards where somehow not sitting correctly in their slots. I could not even install from the Live CD because it was crashing with different kernel panic errors every time.

After testing the memory cards one by one and fixing them back correctly, everything worked and I installed a fresh Ubuntu 14.10 (I had to do it because of all the half crashed installation tries). Everything works fine now.

So the solution to the drivers problem was actually solved after installing the open drivers as suggested by Νίκος Φυτίλης

I'm going to add an answer and signed it as the correct answer

Hope it helps someone (:

I'm answering my own question.

First, I installed the open graphic drivers as suggested by Νίκος Φυτίλης

HOW? WHAT IS THE ACTUAL COMMAND?

Afterward, I removed fglrx, but I still didn't get the desktop bars (unity and the top bars).

sudo apt-get remove fglrx
sudo apt-get install fglrx

I wanted to reset compiz but got some errors that the display is not found because I was using the only accessible terminal Ctr+Alt+F1

So after using export DISPLAY=:0 before reseting compiz, everything came back (:.

export DISPLAY=:0
sudo dconf reset -f /org/compiz/ <<<<<<<<<<<<< THIS COMMAND DOES NOT WORK FOR ME?
sudo setsid unity

Restarting lightdm...

sudo service lightdm restart

... brought everything back (:

Should I install ubuntu 12.04 or 13.04?

Recently I have migrated from ubuntu 13.04 64 bits to 32 bits in my laptop because I was getting some trouble with some software. Meanwhile, I have faced another problems with compatibility, with guitar pro 6 that I can't open after installing ( and I can made it work on ubuntu 12.04 in a virtual machine).
Should I downgrade to ubuntu 12.04? Are there more programs available for ubuntu 12.04 than for 13.04?

12.04 is a long term release, supported for five years. In theory, this is the version that developers should be targeting if they want their software to just-work™.

Sticking with the LTS sounds like a sensible idea in your case. I would suggest testing a LiveCD before you next upgrade (and perhaps wait for the next LTS - 14.04).

16.04 - How do I unlock apt?

Ubuntu 16.04 with Cinnamon desktop.

I cannot update. Attempting gives

$ sudo apt-get update
Reading package lists... Done

E: Unable to lock directory /var/lib/apt/lists/

I can check to see what file has this locked:

I don't know what /usr/sbin/aptd is or if it's safe to kill. man /usr/sbin/aptd exists, but it didn't tell me much. I can't find anything about this in particular online, either.

Is /usr/sbin/aptd related to the small orange square with the white star in my system tray that keeps trying to remind me to update? Is it safe to kill?

Edit: After waiting a while, whatever had the lock released it on its own. No need to kill anything.

software installation - Error during apt-get update

While running apt-get i get the following error :-

I have tried a number of solutions each of which failed. I can't install any software using sudo apt-get update in their script now :(
I have already tried system updates, trying to contact the keyserver (which always returns a timeout)

Typically running the following should work:

 sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 99E82A75642AC823
sudo apt-get update

In this case, I don't think this will work because:

  1. There is no trusty packages for octave as you can see from here

  2. User samrog131 no longer maintains a PPA as you can see from here

It is better to remove these PPAs from your sources list. Read an excellent answer from How can I fix a 404 Error when using a PPA or updating my package lists? to know how to do that.

When I turn the monitor on, I get an "input out of range", how do I fix this?

My computer was working fine a few days ago but now when I turn it on it displays:

input out of range

I don’t know what the problem is and have tried unplugging and plugging all the cords but it seems not to be working. I am fairly new to computers so easy instructions please.

windows 10 dual boot with Ubuntu

I am unable to install ubuntu on my windows-10 HP-laptop, through usb disk. The computer is unable to detect the USB while in UEFI mode(secure boot, fast boot turned off),but is detecting when in legacy mode. And I am able to install ubuntu in legacy mode, but ubuntu wont show up during system boot.I have also tried boot-repair-disk from USB disk, but it needs to run when the computer is in UEFI mode, but the USB disk is not being detected.

How can I make the computer to detect the USB disk in UEFI mode.
How can I install ubuntu alongside windows 10

Ubuntu 16.04 usb drive only available after opening in Nautilus

I'm running a vanilla install of Ubuntu 16.04. There's a USB drive that I want to access through Plex but it's not available to Plex (the media server is unable to access files) until I have manually navigated to the drive in Nautilus. I think the act of navigating to it is what triggers the automount.

In addition to Plex problems I am unable to cd into or ls the directory from terminal until it has been opened in Nautilus. I am told "Permission Denied".

How can I have the drive automounted and available after startup with no manual intervention in Nautilus?

I run Plex server at home, and the only way that I was able to solve this with USB hard drives was to manually add them to the /etc/fstab file so they would come up on the same mount after every reboot.

First, get the UUID of the partition of the drive:

blkid

Mine that we are going to use is a Seagate external drive.

~$ blkid
/dev/sda1: LABEL="Seagate Backup Plus Drive" UUID="6AAA4323AA42EB61" TYPE="ntfs"

Or you can use lsblk:

:~$ lsblk -o NAME,LABEL,TYPE,UUID
NAME LABEL TYPE UUID
sda disk
└─sda1 Seagate Backup Plus Drive part 6AAA4323AA42EB61

We can see the UUID there of 6AAA4323AA42EB61. Now, we create a mount point where we are going to have that drive mount every time:

sudo mkdir -p /media/Seagate

We will now add the information to the /etc/fstab file so that every time we boot the computer it will mount that drive in the same location. We will add a nofail option so that if the drive is disconnected or not powered on the boot process will still complete.

First, backup your /etc/fstab file in case something goes wrong.

sudo cp /etc/fstab /etc/fstab.orig

Then use your favorite editor with sudo access and add the following line to /etc/fstab. Or I will put a line below it that will allow you to add it via an echo line:

UUID=6AAA4323AA42EB61 /media/Seagate ntfs defaults,nofail 0 0

That line can be added via echo like so:

sudo bash -c 'echo "UUID=6AAA4323AA42EB61 /media/Seagate ntfs defaults,nofail 0 0" >> /etc/fstab'

You can then run sudo mount -a to mount the drive in that location now, or you can reboot the host and it should come up in the same location every time now.

Hope this helps!

compatibility - High end ubuntu for 7 inch instead of 10 inch tablet

I have read the specs for ubuntu touch. Is it possible to run it on a 7 or 8 inch quad core tablet instead of dual core processor if it meets all the other specs? Are these minimum specs or does it present a display problem if the screen is smaller than 10-12 inches?

server - Inproper image for Raspppbery PI Snappy Core?

while for Samsung ARTIK it points to ubuntu-15.04-snappy-armhf-rpi2.img

I am asking because the RPI version seems to be just a server version of Ubuntu not a core snappy with no apt-get support. I want the limited version for porpose.
Can someone explain me the difference ?

uefi - Create custom Ubuntu live USB on a Windows 8.1 host

I own a laptop (Acer Aspire V3-571G) running Windows 8.1 using an UEFI to boot the system. I've read that changing this to BIOS would cause trouble with Windows, so it is not an option.

First I tried to create a Ubuntu 14.04 LiveUSB with persistence enabled. However I couldn't manage to boot it (it never showed up in the list of bootable devices). A live version of the same distribution however was bootable.

The problem with the LiveUSB version is, that I can't do any permanent changes to the installed packages, which I need to customize. There are a view guides out there telling how to create a custom Linux distribution using Linux tools. However I couldn't find anything on how to do it on a Windows machine.

So how do I setup a custom Ubuntu 14.04 Live-USB on Windows 8.1? Any advice is highly appreciated.

Warning! This does not give a direct answer to your question but it gives a work-around with some bonus content. Hope it helps.

You can always install Ubuntu in VirtualBox, do your thing there and as a bonus also test your modified Ubuntu in a virtual environment before you even try it out on your real hardware. Booting from a virtual USB is not an issue but as far as I remember you need the Oracle version for the USB support, which is not available in the open source one. When I'm doing stuff like this I always check and double check in VBox. That's why every custom Ubuntu I've managed to create never failed to boot or give me serious headaches on my machine.

Take a look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDCustomization#Testing_the_CD (VBox is mentioned before the Troubleshooting sub-section). Make sure you also read the full article. It's worth it.

Of course testing in VBox does NOT guarantee you a 100% successful deployment especially when it comes to hardware (e.g. you add/remove some driver) but it is definitely the preferable way to do customizations and improve their quality.

EDIT
For information on EFI booting see @Whaaaaaat's reply. In addition see @FirefoxMetzger's comment under this reply for the complete chain combining both mine and the reply of @Whaaaaaat for testing and booting the customized Ubuntu Live-USB.

dependencies - i386 support on amd64

I'm running amd64 architecture, and some programs ask me for i386 architecture.

So I've used the sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386 command, but nothing works to upgrade the whole Ubuntu.

Every single ****ing CLI thing I try says me "unmet dependencies required someway that we're unable to perform" and that's a thing that blocks me in absolutely EVERYTHING.

installation - How do I install Half-Life 1 and 2?

How do I install Half-Life 1 and 2 on Ubuntu 12.04 if I already have the game on a Windows installer CD and on Steam. I tried it with Steam, but the game didn't launch. I also tried it on wine with the Windows installer, but it didn't work either.

If you came here to play HL, HL2 or any other Steam for Linux released game see How can I install Steam? for the answer which is a lot simpler than this. This one only apply to games outside the Steam environment or not yet on steam. Also know that Half-Life is natively supported in Ubuntu. Most likely HL2 will follow.

To play both, HL and HL2 (Not through steam) you first need the Wine PPA (It is much better than the actual version that comes with Ubuntu). So first install the Wine PPA (Does not matter if you already have PlayOnLinux installed). PlayOnLinux can work without the need of having Wine installed since it will eventually download its own version of Wine if it detects you do not have one (Including addons which are similar in use as winetricks). It also downloads specific Wine versions even if you have Wine install for some specific cases (Some games in PoL depend on specific Wine versions).

If you use Wine PPA or PlaOnLinux the game should work with no problem.

  1. Follow this guide to install the latest Wine: http://www.winehq.org/download/ubuntu

  2. After that go to Software Center and look for Wine with version 1.5.x. Right now it is 1.5.23. Install it. You can also install it via the terminal with sudo apt-get install wine.

  3. Download PlayOnLinux from their website and install it.

  4. Execute PlayOnLinux at least once so it can download the needed Fonts and configures itself for use.

  5. If you try to run the games with Wine, first try to download, any needed libraries and additional packages the game needs. This can be done with winetricks. You can run winetricks from the Dash or from the terminal like winetricks --gui. For HL, HL2 and many other games I have tested, including but not limited to: Trine, Trine2, Portal, Portal2 and many others I recommend the following Winetricks installation:

Open Winetricks and select Select the default wineprefix

    enter image description here

Select **Install a windows DLL or component

    enter image description here

Install all that I have marked (and any additional you need for a specific app). This should cover many apps and games. I have not had any additional problems after installing this with many games:

    enter image description here

    enter image description here

    enter image description here

    enter image description here

The Physx component, even if you do not have Nvidia, you still need to install it for games that require it.

Now simply right click the installer for HL1 or HL2 and select Open with Wine. Tested again with both games. Working perfectly (Not the Steam version, only the older CD/DVD versions).

  6. If you try to run the game through PlayOnLinux, the app will guide you step by step on how to install the game and will take care of many aspects of it's installation including needed DLL and other components to make it work right.

10.10 - Compiling latest GNOME-Shell

This question pretends to be a central place where people share info about compiling the latest and greatest GNOME-Shell environment in Ubuntu 10.10.

As GNOME-Shell now depends on gtk3 and in a lot of other new modules, and the GNOME-hell PPA is no longer around, it's actually quite difficult to test it without, as I've read somewhere,

"compiling half of the GNOME desktop"

I've tried with jhbuild just yesterday and only some modules were built, but gnome-shell and gtk3 weren't included in those that built.

As some solutions posted here may seem get quite dangerous, I was thinking about setting up a VM w/ Ubuntu 10.10, and I think that most of you will agree with me.

So, in conclusion, questions that need to be answered:

  1. Is there any new GNOME-Shell PPA for
    Maverick?

  2. Can jhbuild gnome-shell install script be fixed in order to allow a clean build?

  3. If not, any other easy ways to get it, excluding manual compilling?

  4. When installed, will GNOME-Shell work with Virtualbox emulated graphics stack?

Ladies and gentleman, the question is now yours. Let the answering begin...

have you tried the steps in the following article at WebUpd8?

Version Ubuntu 12.10 for Intel

Possible Duplicate:
amd64, i386 (32bit / 64bit) - Which version to choose?
Difference between the i386 download and the amd64?

When i want to start the download of Ubuntu 12.10 desktop 64 bit, it directly want to download the amd64 iso. Does this mean there is also a Intel version ? If so, where can it be found ? I have an Intel core2duo T9300 2.50Ghz processor so it can run the 64 bit version.

specs:
http://ark.intel.com/products/33917/Intel-Core2-Duo-Processor-T9300-6M-Cache-2_50-GHz-800-MHz-FSB

Thanks in advanced

"AMD64" is just a way of saying "64Bit", the i386 version is just 32bit. I am using a Intel processor with AMD64 so it should work just fine.

My understanding is that AMD developed 64 bit first and got the right to call it "AMD64", so its all 64 bit and will work with your processor.

command line - Graphics drivers and wifi not working after installing ubuntu

I'm trying to get Ubuntu on a new machine. Neither my graphics drivers or my wifi is working. I need to handle the wifi before handling the graphics drivers, so I'm forced to do this from terminal.

I am not having a driver problem with my wifi. I could connect during the initial install, and could connect download things then, but does not connect automatically on real boots. Right now wlan0 is unknown, but I have been able to make progress with the 'logical name' of my card used in place of that. I have been able to scan for my network with sudo iw $logical_name scan | grep [SSID], so I think I'm close.

I've been following "Connect to WPA/WPA2 via terminal" things, and have been shut down in a few different places.

Failer point 1:

Editing /etc/networking/interface to read

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto
iface inet dhcp
wpa-ssid mynetworkname
wpa-psk mypassphrase

and calling sudo ifup return "unknown interface ", same with wlan0. I have had another person double check the file for correctness.

Failure Point 2

sudo iwconfig wlan0 wpa-ssid mynetworkname
sudo iwconfig wlan0 wpa-psk mypassphrase
sudo dhclient wlan0

called with wlan0 or logical name gives me ' iwconfig: unknown command "wpa-ssid" '

EDIT 1
@Jeremy31 asked why I wasn't using network manager. Answer: I didn't know about it.

nmcli g

WWAN: enabled

nmcli d

Screen freeze/black screen after installing Nvidia drivers (16.04)

  • Videocard: GTX 560

  • NVIDIA drivers installed: nvidia-367 (recommended for my card).

  • OS: Xubuntu 16.04

Problem description:
Video card works perfectly while using X.org drivers, but after installing Nvidia's, I get a black screen or a freeze on the "decrypt HDD" screen.

I have tried various fixes I've found on the site, from setting "nomodeset" to trying every single driver available to "update-initramfs -u" various times. Recovery mode also works; checked with "lspci -v" and it properly runs the driver.

system installation - How to install Ubuntu on Old Computer using a DVD?

I'm new to Linux and am trying to put Ubuntu on a Presario 6000.

I burned Ubuntu onto a DVD and put it in the optical drive, but it keeps saying:

or

I'm not sure what to do because still trying to learn more about computers and operating systems.

command line - Install Nvidia driver instead of nouveau

I've installed Ubuntu 14.04 and I'm experiencing a fuzzy/blurry screen and bad support for multiple screens.

I realized that Ubuntu installs nouveau as default, but I need to install nvidia drivers, so I tried this:

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
apt-get update
apt-get install nvidia-current
apt-get upgrade

Now that nvidia is installed, you need to blacklist the nouveau driver
so it don’t pop out when you will reboot. Create or edit the following
file:

nano /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nouveau.conf

…and add these lines at the end:

blacklist nouveau

blacklist lbm-nouveau
options nouveau modeset=0
alias nouveau off
alias lbm-nouveau off

I checked via the software & updates if nvidia driver got installed successfully, and it says the driver installed is nvidia 304.117

I then tried to run:

lshw -c video | grep 'configuration'

and the result is that the driver is still nouveau:

configuration: driver=nouveau latency=0

So how do I install and use the nvidia drivers?

14.04 - How to connect to a network without having a GUI at any point of time?

I have gone through other questions on connecting to a Wi-Fi network from a terminal. nmcli works from the command line if the password provided is correct. If the password is wrong:

  1. The network manager opens a dialog box asking for the right password

  2. The command doesn't exit till I click on "Cancel" (returns 4 on cancel)

Is there a way to try to connect to a network without having this dialog box pop up if there is an error?

I need this to connect to a Wi-Fi network from a ctrl + alt + F terminal. Here it just keeps waiting and the prompt doesn't return.

Wireless-LAN TL-WN821N is not starting automatically on startup

I installed a USB-WLAN-Stick by using Windows Wireless Drivers-Application and windows drivers. It took me some time to get it run but now it works. The only problem I have got is, that it does not start automatically on ubuntu startup or the moment I log on with my account.

So I always have to manually add the following commands in the terminal:

sudo modprobe -rfv ath9k_htc
sudo modprobe -v ath9k_htc

After having done so, WLAN works perfectly. Is there a possibility to make WLAN start automatically on ubuntu startup?

Thank you for your ideas!

networking - Cannot get Netgear WNDA 3100v3 wifi dongle to work

First, I have read all of the following, and they get close to helping, but I can't comment requesting more help because I don't have enough beans.

I have gone through the steps of installing the drivers from https://github.com/jurobystricky/Netgear-A6210, but nothing happens. Installed drivers for my adapter but its not working is the most helpful, but confusing. Could someone pick up where they left off in the last comments? They start talking about encryption, but I just need help getting the drivers to work. What info do you need? My brain hurts from trying to clarify and anticipate questions.

That driver is the only correct driver I know of for your system. It compiles perfectly on my 16.10 system. It creates a driver mt7662u_sta. Does the driver load without error or warning if you load it?

sudo modprobe mt7662u_sta

NOTE: This is not a complete answer; I will edit it as we gather further diagnostics.

12.04 - Windows not in GRUB startup screen

I recently used Boot Repair to fix GRUB startup, but now when I start my computer, Windows XP, my old OS, doesn't apppear. It shows Ubuntu, Ubuntu (recovery mode), memory test and a second memory test. There is also a subsection for previous Linux versions, but that only contains Ubuntu and its recovery. Help would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like you need to detect your installed OSs again. Boot into your normal Ubuntu, open a terminal and run

sudo update-grub

That should detect all installed operating systems and update your grub accordingly. Windows should be there next time you reboot, as long as you see a line similar to this in the output:

Found Windows XP (loader) on /dev/sda2

java - gzip: stdin: unexpected end of file -> problem in extracting jdk-7u55-linux-x64.tar.gz

I have downloaded 'jdk-7u55-linux-x64.tar.gz'

When I execute following command to extract,

 sudo tar xvzf jdk-7u55-linux-x64.tar.gz

also tried,

sudo tar xvf jdk-7u55-linux-x64.tar.gz

sudo tar xf jdk-7u55-linux-x64.tar.gz
sudo tar -xvf jdk-7u55-linux-x64.tar.gz

But am getting error at last as,

gzip: stdin: unexpected end of file
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

How to resolve this ?

Please don't use sudo unless necessary. If you are extracting this into a directory you have access to, there's no need for sudo.

Anyway, the error you're getting is usually due to an incomplete download. The archive ends before the expected footer of the gzipped file. It will probably work fine if you just download it again.

gnome - 18.04: Appindicators disappear after every reboot

I have a GTX970 and i7-3770. I upgraded Ubuntu to 18.04 from 16.04. Now I have the problem that appindicators disappear every time I startup my system, reboot, or even when the PC goes back from sleep.

To solve the issue, I need to restart Gnome shell every time this happens (press Alt+F2 and type r).

I already tried to remove the .gnome-shell folders, but the problem is still there.

How can I solve this without restarting Gnome shell every time? The command I do is the same, I press Alt+F2 and then I type r, that is doing exactly that command. Of course, restarting gnome shell makes the indicators reappear, but I want that they don't disappear, and want to understand why this happens.

What I tried:

Installing topicons extensions.
Removing gnome folders on my local share.

but nothing is working. Every time I use my PC I need to restart Gnome shell, and it's starting to be annoying.

The command I do is the same, I press alt+f2 and then I type r, that is doing exactly that command. Of course, restarting gnome shell make the indicators reappear, but I want that they don't disappear, and want to understand why this happens.

I have the topicons extension, but icons like skype or telegram are not loaded by this extension. They are loaded by some weird extensions included in ubuntu. I see there is 'ubuntu appindicators' extension, that is currently disabled by default, but the "ubuntu dock" is disabled too, and is currently working. So maybe there is some extensions conflict caused by some Ubuntu settings?

If i remove the gnome shell folders (with extensions etc), my desktop turn to default, and i still have the extensions dock and appindicators disabled and working.

Thank you.

UPDATE: I noticed that i have the same problem on another PC that has an i7-3770 too, but a gt430 gpu.
I really don't know if is a driver-related problem, but i have done the upgrade from 16 to 18.04 on this pc too, and i have the top icons like skype or telegram that disappear. I don't have this problem for icons like dropbox, diodon, or dreamweaver. I think these icons are 2 different types called by different extensions/widget.

UPDATE2:
I have the "Ubuntu appindicators" extension. That is disabled by default, i don't see any change by enabling it.
Is maybe the default ubuntu appindicator extension bugged?
I have the same problem with the dock extension, but this is working without problems.

New update: Isnt there any folder that can i delete? I tried with a new user and it works.

Update: Solution:
Tray icons disappears sometimes in Ubuntu 17.10

RUN apt-get update && apt-get install -y nano zsh curl git

# Instal Oh my Zsh

RUN bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.github.com/robbyrussell/oh-my-zsh/master/tools/install.sh)"

# Add none root user
RUN adduser admin
USER admin

I'm connecting with the admin user with the zsh shell.

docker exec -ti linux zsh

I'm adding a non-root user (admin).

I still want to execute a sudo command with this user, but it errors out:

$ sudo apt-get install vim
zsh: command not found: sudo

Same message with bash shell.

How can I run sudo commands with a non-root user?

When I don't use sudo I get a permission error:

$ apt-get install vim

networking - Unable to locate package linux-firmware-nonfree

I'm trying to resolve a problem with wireless connectivity on my Toshiba C55-C-184 laptop. I asked about this problem here.

It looks like the problem is with the Intel Corporation Wireless 3160 network controller. I've found a couple of posts that suggest making sure that the latest versions of linux-firmware and linux-firmware-nonfree are installed.

When I install linux-firmware I get

sudo apt-get install linux-firmware
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
linux-firmware is already the newest version (1.157.8).
0 to upgrade, 0 to newly install, 0 to remove and 21 not to upgrade.

so all seems OK there. But when I try to install linux-firmware-nonfree I get the following:

sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package linux-firmware-nonfree

which is clearly not so good.

I did a Google search, and it seems that the package does, in fact, exist, so why can't I locate it?

As always, any help will be appreciated. Especially if you can explain why it's not working as well as how I can go about fixing it. I'm always looking to expand my working knowledge of Linux.

The reason your Ubuntu release (from previous question I assume it is 16.04) can't locate this package is that it was only released for older versions, namely Precise, and Trusty of the still supported releases.

This package won't help with the Intel iwlwifi driver anyway, as the Intel drivers traditionally are Open Source and already included in the default kernel firmware packages.

So to get a newer driver I would recommend to update the kernel to the HWE kernel (What is hardware enablement (HWE)?), or install a later Ubuntu release.

My son has a laptop that I installed Ubuntu on as dual boot. The other OS is Windows XP, that runs perfectly and has for some time now. I had a hard drive, installed it, installed Windows XP (SP2) on it, then put in the SAME Ubuntu disk I used on my son's computer, and it went through the ENTIRE installation/setup process.

Then when I went to reboot the computer, I was expecting to have to select which operating system, but it goes straight into trying to boot up on Ubuntu, it goes through the initial splash screen, displaying information about my system, then the screen goes black and the cursor is blinking in the top left-hand corner of the screen, then goes off and comes back on screen one or two lines further down, but nothing other than the cursor is on the screen, and that is where it stays. It will not do anything else. I can press Ctrl+Alt+Del, and it will reboot or I can manually power down, but it comes back to the same point. I love Ubuntu, is there anything to be done?

ssd - 18.04 and 18.10 fail to boot nvme0: failed to set APST feature (-19)

I’m a relatively new Ubuntu user and I’ve bought a new laptop for developing. However, I’ve had a whole host of problems trying to get it working with Ubuntu. I’ve agonised over this for nearly two days and below I’ve tried to summarised the main issues I’m having:

Got these issues on both Ubuntu 18.04 and 18.10 and as a main install, so NOT dual booting with anything.

First issue: Ubuntu installer would not find my ssd m.2 drive to install.

  • First fix attempt: used acpi=off as a boot option which worked and was able to install.

  • Problem with this: after install I was not able to boot without acpi=off, which would then severly impede my laptop’s performance (only shows and uses one cpu core when I have 6. Any attempt to load without acpi=off results in the ‘nvme0: failed to set APST feature’ boot error.

  • Second fix attempt: used nvme_load=YES as boot option. This was more promising.

  • Problem with this: everything was working great and managed to boot Ubuntu fine. But, I then did the first software update it asks for and upon restart, back to the above error.

FWIW - I tried to install ArchLinux and that did work fine for a few hours until It froze and I had to power off with the power button, resulting in a different NVMe failure.

Edit: I must note that secure boot and fast boot is off and achi sata mode mode is on

This is my laptop specification:

American Megatrends motherboard bios version 7.004 (sorry I don’t know what more information I can give for this?)
Intel® Core™ i7 Six Core Processor 8750H (2.2GHz, 4.1GHz Turbo)
16GB Corsair 2133MHz SODIMM DDR4 (2 x 8GB)
NVIDIA® GeForce® MX150 - 2.0GB DDR5 Video RAM
512GB INTEL® 760p M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD

Would really appreciate any help on this. I fear I’m going to have to just use Windows until my hardware is supported.

I finally got Ubuntu 18.10 to install. I added nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=200 to my /etc/default/grub file.

So, it looks like this: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=200"

From this answer: EXT4-fs error after Ubuntu 17.04 upgrade

Now works like a dream.
