Updating Realtek wireless driver
so I've had problems with my wireless for a few months and now I really have to use linux to start programming again so I really need to get this fixed.
I've been searching the web about my problem and appareantly the problem is the driver, so I'm trying to update it, but I can't seem to be able to do so.
I've been following this tutorial: https://unixblogger.wordpress.com/2011/10/18/the-pain-of-an-realtek-rtl8111rtl8168-ethernet-card/
But I'm stuck where I have to add the new driver to the kernel with the following command:
root@ubuntu:~/r8168-8.032.00# insmod src/r8168.ko
insmod: error inserting 'src/r8168.ko': -1 File exists
I've tried every "path" i can think of and I keep getting errors when I try to add the new driver. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Also, for more information about my computer (in case you need its necessary) everything's in this link: Centrino Wireless-N 1000 takes forever to connect and keeps asking for password
boot - 16.04 Nvidia proprietary driver problems
On 16.04 xubuntu fresh install, I have an Nvidia Gtx 980 and an apple 30" 2560x1600 display, after installing proprietary nvidia drivers, I get two problems, the first, I can't log in during the encryption screen, the screen resolution is very low, and I can't type in my password. I've been having a hard time troubleshooting this, is the part where you input your password to unlock your encrypted drive called the boot splash screen, or something else?
When I have the open source noveau drivers, the encryption login screen is at a much higher resolution and I can type my password in. The only way I can log in is with recovery mode for now, which leads me to the next problem.
The second problem, with the proprietary nvidia drivers, it does not recognize my monitor as of 16.04, and it does not show up at all in the monitor panel in ubuntu, and it only gives me one resolution option to choose from, which is a very low resolution.
Thanks for your help.
Edit: so 'disabling' secure boot has fixed the second problem, unfortunately, I still get the first problem. The only way to boot into my pc is to boot it once, turn it off as I can't do anything at the encryption screen, and it's still low resolution only at the encryption log in screen, boot it a second time, then it loads grub, I continue a normal boot, I get a black screen instead of the Luks password screen, I type in my encryption password, and I can log in.
In my bios of my asus z170-a motherboard I had to pick "other os" under secure boot, but it still says secure boot is enabled, I read that I have to delete the secure boot keys to disable secure boot completely. Does secure boot add any security benefits to Linux? Can I disable secure boot from Ubuntu if I can't from my bios?
usb - How to Make BIOS/UEFI Flash Drive with Full Disk Encryption
Ubuntu 18.04 Full Disk Encryption now works on Full install flash drives.
The ability to separately encrypt home directory / home partition has been eliminated.
How to make an Encrypted BIOS/UEFI Flash Drive with different passwords for home and system using a script?
installation - Cannot install Ubuntu 12.04.2 on Windows 8 in legacy mode, no partitions detected in gparted?
I want to dual boot Ubuntu alongside Windows 8. Windows 8 is installed in legacy mode (not UEFI). When I use a Ubuntu 12.04.2 cd to install, it does not detect Windows 8. If I click on custom installation, it says that the entire hard drive is free space, i.e. does not detect any partitions.
I also loaded a Gparted iso, and that also failed to detect any partitions. fdisk -l returned nothing.
Any ideas on why windows 8 is not detected by Ubuntu / no partitions are detected by gparted?
PS. Please explain things simply if possible. I'm a linux noob ...
