versions - Install an old OpenShot release in Ubuntu 18.04

OpenShot is a free video editing software. In 2017, developpers updated it in a QT version. Recently I moved to Ubuntu 18.04 instead of 16.04 so I had no choice and had to use the new version of OpenShot. But, this version is paradoxaly slow and not precise at all. So can you help me to downgrade to the former version 1.4.3(for instance) instead of 2.x version(the new one) ?

I tested many alternative like Shotcut, Flowblade or Kdenlive but I prefere the old OpenShot. I know that what I ask for can create an unstable system but I really need it for school and if I can't install it on 18.04 I have to downgrade to 16.04.

apt - How to version control of Kernel ABI versions and matching package repositories?

I need to be able to version control a Ubuntu LTS kernel version at the ABI version level with the matching packages for my current and future installations of a given kernel.

Given the Ubuntu kernel version numbering scheme:

[base kernel version]-[ABI number].[upload number]-[flavour]

Part 1

How long is a given kernel ABI version of the kernel supported for with LTS releases? For example, when creating an Amazon AWS 16.04 image, the kernel is currently 4.4.0-36. In general, how long should I expect the -36 version to remain available? By available I mean I can obtain the image from an official Ubuntu download site and install packages for that OS/kernel version without having to downgrade packages.

Part 2

Assuming I want to be able to support a given ABI level of the Kernel for longer than the ABI version is available on the internet, what do I need to do to mirror the package repositories so I can install packages on my systems? Are there any guides on how to create a local mirror of packages so I can maintain a version controlled OS baseline against a given kernel ABI? I understand that once the kernel has been superseded, it is difficult to take a current image and downgrade it to a desired baseline as the package repository baselines are not archived as such.

networking - Wireless problems Lenovo Thinkpad E580

I recently got a Thinkpad and installed Ubuntu 18.04. I am having trouble connecting to wifi but ethernet works great. I have looked around but have not found any solutions that work.

drivers - Unable to fix Ubuntu 16.04 “The system is running in low-graphics mode” error

In an attempt to set up an external monitor, I have screwed up my Ubuntu 16.04 Dell laptop. Seems like I messed up the graphic drivers and now I am stuck at the “The system is running in low-graphics mode” screen with no option to proceed after booting.

I can only run commands from a terminal by pressing CTRL+ALT+F1.

Output of lspci command says VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices. Inc [AMD/ATI] Mars [Radeon HD 8730] (rev ff)

Here is what I have tried so far:

• I tried to fix the issue by following this step-by-step guide. However, no luck. Especially, sudo apt-get install fglrx yield no such package.


• I also followed the official guidelines by AMD. No luck here as well. No noticeable errors as such. But, the error message "system is running in low-graphics mode” still persists after reboot.


• As a last resort, I tried to upgrade to 18.04 LTS through a bootable flash USB. To my bad luck, there is no option to upgrade, and it shows only install alongside or erase/reinstall.

I have spent almost 8 hours trying to debug now, and all my trials are getting useless and redundant. Any help to guide me in the right direction would be much appreciated. What am I missing basically?

You need to boot from Ubuntu LiveUSB first.

Your sda5, sda6 and sda7 partitions are inside the extended sda4 partition.

You will need to extend sda4, then move sda5 and sda6 left, then extend sda7.

You will also need to re-install grub, because start sector of your /boot partition will change. It can be done from LiveUSB by

sudo mount /dev/sda5 /mnt
sudo mount /dev/sda7 /mnt/boot
sudo chroot /mnt
sudo grub-install /dev/sda
exit

kernel - Why an I2C device driver doesn't appear in /sys/bus/i2c/drivers?

Starting from an image ubuntu-18.04.2-preinstalled-server-arm64+raspi3.img.xz (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ARM/RaspberryPi) I'm trying to add the ad525x_dpot I2C driver which was not enabled during the build of the kernel.

I've taken ad525x_dpot.c, ad525x_dpot.h, ad525x_dpot-i2c.c from the corresponding linux source to make a DKMS package.

The module ad525x_dpot can be loaded by modprobe and it shows in lsmod but not in /sys/bus/i2c/drivers. There are some warnings in syslog.

Why doesn't it show in /sys/bus/i2c/drivers?

I've tried to load a similar kernel module ad799x that comes with the kernel. It appears in /sys/bus/i2c/drivers/ad799x (no devices are defined to use the ad799x, so it's not related to the device tree or the board config).

Had to split ad525x_dpot.o and ad525x_dpot-i2c.o into two DKMS packages to have two separate kernel modules.
