login - cant log into ubuntu as main/only user but can as guest

Up graded to ubuntu 13.10. all ok then installed updates and afterwards trying to log in as usual just produced a loop of repeated login screens, but logging in as guest worked ok.

I think the problems may have been exacerbated by changing some permissions in my home directory. I have read these forums but i am unclear about how to execute some of the replies and concerned about making things worse.
I can open a terminal ok. I have tried XDG_CONFIG_HOME=/home/myuser/.config. pressed enter but nothing happens. cursor just flashes.

please explain how to use the terminal to log in and any codes I can try to get my normal login back. thanks

boot - Get Back Ubuntu's GRUB menu with Ubuntu first

Initial setup working: Ubuntu and Windows

My laptop had two OS working:

  1. Ubuntu 14.04 and

  2. Windows 8.1

At boot it showed "GNU GRUB Version 2.02 by Ubuntu."

Current setup, not satisfying

I recently installed Linux mint 18.2 cinnamon on it.
Now at boot it shows GNU GRUB version 2.02~beta2-36ubuntu3.9+linuxmint1 and Linux Mint first:

photo

Desired setup: Ubuntu first, Ubuntu GRUB style

I'd like Ubuntu 14.04 at the first position, Linuxmint, and Windows after that. Also, I'd like GRUB with the Ubuntu style with Magenta background color.

As said in comment, I've deleted Linux Mint and don't know how to get Ubuntu first in list.

boot - How to replace or remove kernel with signed kernels

Whenever I am updating ubuntu getting following error message. The message is asking me to remove or replace the current kernel version with the signed version.

How to do this?

Below is the message I am getting:

Your system has UEFI Secure Boot enabled in firmware, and the

Ubuntu 12.04 totally freezes while browsing or using VirtualBox

My system:
 Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit
 8GB memory
 Intel Core i3 540
AMD ATI RV710 [Radeon HD 4350] - graphic driver

I have tried to figure out what is causing the freeze, but I have not found it. It typically happens when I browse in any browser to websites with flash content or are rich graphically. It also freezes when I use VirtualBox, and I have had a lot of difficulty installing different distros in VirtualBox. I have managed to install after tweaking VirtualBox, but it still freezes the whole system.

I have tried both to use the proprietary graphic driver and without using it, both ways it freezes.

When I was running Ubuntu 10.04 before, everything worked fine until after I installed Ubuntu 12.04. I have put more memory in between, but running memtest did not find any errors.

Regarding browsers, Chrome was the worst browser, so I have uninstalled it. Opera and Firefox still crash.

I have tried Ctrl + Alt + F1 - no response.
I have tried Alt + SysRq + REISUB slowly - no response.
What happens is that the screen locks and there is no response from any device. The only way to get it running is to push the reset button on my computer.

It actually froze when I was using the Firefox spellchecker (right mouse click) on this question.

So how can I get a stable system? How can I find what is wrong and fix it?

It could be a hardware issue, in particular the graphics card. This would at least explain why freezing occurs when you are using applications that require additional graphics processing.

apt - Can't upgrade Ubuntu 16.04.5 LTS to 18.04.1 LTS because can't upgrade libbluray-bdj

I am unable to upgrade from Ubuntu 16.04.5 LTS to 18.04.1 LTS because one package has not been upgraded (libbluray-bdj). When I try to upgrade it, it can't be upgraded because it depends on a package (libasm-java) that is not upgradable because it has no installation candidate. When I try to remove libbluray-bdj, it tells me it will remove ubuntu-mate-desktop which I don't want to do.

I was performing the upgrade via the terminal because I did a partial upgrade through Software Updater previously (before I ran into these problems), and I don't want to leave my system in a partial uprade state between 16.04.5 and 18.04.1.

I just want to upgrade to 18.04.1. Thanks!

Here are the commands I used and their outputs:

Spend enough time really absing Ubuntu and you'll hit dependencies issues like this.

I have a whole boatload of PPAs installed at any given moment so upgrades are often quite fun. That isn't your problem —it looks like there's a missing package in the repo for whatever reason, and I have options like ppa-purge— but my typical approach to fixing is what I'd recommend to you...

  1. Remove any problematic packages. Yes, even the ubuntu-mate-desktop meta-package.

  2. Do your upgrade but don't do the package clean-up it offers at the end. Not a disaster if you do.

  3. Reboot. Hopefully you're still on a desktop but even if you aren't, find your way to the nearest terminal and sudo apt install ubuntu-mate-desktop.

  4. If you managed to hold of the stage-2 cleanup, it's time to run sudo apt autoremove to remove automatic packages that aren't required any more.

It's scary, it looks wrong, but packages can be removed and reinstalled and nothing is lost forever. Your desktop config lives in your $HOME and isn't part of the remove. System settings in /etc/ aren't removed by apt remove (that's purge's job). You might end up at a command line. You might need nmtui to get yourself connected at the other side, but it's all relatively low risk.

I think you've identified why this has happened. Some sort of fruity bug in libasm-java, or the packaging of it, that is blocking everything around it. This won't affect you in 18.04 because ubuntu-mate-desktop` no longer depends on it.

I'd like to think that this answer is transferable to any instance where you're up against a package conflict but be conscious of what it is you're removing.

In this case it's a crufty old Bluray library and a meta-package for a desktop environment. If you start seeing important things like network-manager or linux-image pop up in the "going to be REMOVED" warning, take a step back and start a new question :D

Ubuntu 14.04 LTS randomly freezes (graphics/unity only)

When I'm just chilling on the desktop or doing whatever, Ubuntu 14.04 LTS will (every 10-20 minutes or so) just randomly freeze. The screen just stops, I can't see my mouse move, etc. However, I can Alt+Ctrl+F1 into a tty terminal (though it's not much use).

However, I noticed that if I close my laptop's lid, re-open it, then enter my password to unlock the lock screen, everything is fine.

What is going on here? How can I fix / stop / prevent this?

Note: My laptop has an nvidia-optimus setup, but Ubuntu 14.04 LTS automatically recognized it and had the nvidia drivers applied.

17.04. boot.log doesn't log everything on screen

Sometimes I see messages that cause a boot delay but because of the speed of my computer, they still don't cause a major delay. However, when I look at boot.log (/var/log/boot.log), I find that not all the information that appears during the startup sequence is logged in boot.log. The information is in syslog. An example is

[drm] RC6 on

which I notice causes a hesitation. But it doesn't show up in boot.log. Now I am not concerned about that particular message but I am concerned that boot.log doesn't show everything displayed. Because of the speed, it is often difficult to read the exact info on the screen and thus search in syslog for it whereas if it were in boot.log, I would only need to look for words I recognize that occur around it to find what the exact message was and therefore to know whether it is important enough to further check on it.

Your ubuntu release uses systemd (as do all releases since 15.04.)

systemd relies on journald for logging and the log can be accessed using journalctl.

For your particular use, journalctl -b should show the information you want.
