nvidia - Why do I have poor gaming performance in Ubuntu?

I've been a happy linux user for some time, keeping a dual boot of windows to run some video games. However, after purchasing a new computer and seeing numerous articles on the rapid progress of linux for running games, I though I'd give it another try.
I installed Ubuntu 16.04 (gamepack version) and tried a few games using Steam Play, Playonlinux, Lutris, Wine and Crossover. Every time, games that would run smoothly in windows on high settings (Final Fantasy XIII, Star Wars Battlefront II 2017, Guns of Icarus) won't run at all, or run so slowly that they are unplayable.

Does anyone have suggestions on how to increase performance?

  • (Proprietary Nvidia Driver 418.40.04, released 3/19)
