networking - Installing a Linux OS with no desktop (only SSH access)

I need help and I do not know where to ask. I want to set up a Linux OS, via a CD-ROM, that only has a command line, auto starts SSH access for root user, and that I can run gmodserver on using this tutorial:

https://www.linode.com/docs/game-servers/garrys-mod-server-on-centos-7

I've tried installing Lubuntu (which didn't even install), and Debian, which installed a desktop interface that I don't need, and doesn't seem to know the sudo command. This tutorial recommends CentOS but again I don't know where to start looking or how to get one that has auto SSH.

All I want is a PC I can plug in without any screen that auto-starts this server through a wired connection. I have no prior Linux experience.
